Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia (CDH), similar to other birth defects, has many dimensions to conduct research on. Medical research on CDH is one main focus, but perhaps not the only focus. Challenges still arise on how CDH families cope. The Project Development Committee has begun to develop an initiative to conduct inter-disciplinary research on all issues surrounding CDH. These issues are not only limited to the development of CDH, related complications, and procedures to mitigate further health risks or to avoid infant mortality. Globally, these issues are just the tip of the iceberg. Global CDH is committed to researching the socio-economic and even political responses to the epidemic we know as CDH. The main goal is to raise awareness among the international community, within international organizations, on CDH, to identify the roles of the international community, and to hopefully extend support for CDH families around the globe.
Global CDH is not only committed to supporting families and children dealing with this issue. We are committed to building a young generation who are aware of these issues and more importantly, to allow individuals with similar interests to become involved in our research initiative. Therefore, Global CDH is proud to announce the official launch of our student internship program. The aim is to bring university students who are interested in similar topics that could be applied to our initiative to join us for a duration of time. The internship project has not only been designed to conduct inter-disciplinary research, but was also created to allow selected interns to gain the first hand experience in research design, nonprofit management and organization, networking techniques, and to foster any academic related interests the student seeks as they are interning with us.
The end goal of our research initiative is to create an inter-disciplinary scholarly journal addressing many dimensions of CDH. It will shed light on the medical challenges, economic impact to families, hospitals, international organizations, and even at the government level, the social impact CDH families endure, especially those living in poor rural communities around the world. CDH has been described as an epidemic and therefore we hope that inter-discipinary research will show how this epidemic happened and hopefully how it can be rectified.
