Global CDH Logo

Meaning of the Global CDH Logo

The butterfly is iconic to what the Global CDH Logo depicts. It captures, through a symbolic representation, our cause, our mission, and our vision. Similar to a butterfly, every child born with a congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) has an unusual life cycle because of the challenges provided to them before birth and after birth. As such our logo represents the metamorphosis a butterfly undergoes from larval caterpillar into a colorful form. The colors on the logo are also symbolic – Turquoise is the official color of Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia and yellow represents both genders.

A child diagnosed with CDH experience many challenges due its pathophysiologic nature. Through perseverance, roughly 70% of the infants diagnosed with CDH overcome the many challenges they face within their first months. Hence, the butterfly illustrates Strength, Hope, and Courage. Through advise and assistance, we hope to deliver strength, hope, and courage to both babies and parents to give their little butterflies the wings of freedom that enables them to overcome the challenges they will face. Furthermore, the trail of lines which the butterfly leaves represents each month that the baby is in the womb.

The logo was designed by Victor Sanabriga, VP of Marketing and Design, following his visit to the Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital of New York-Presbyterian Columbia University Medical Center, where the founders' daughter had surgical repair of her right-sided CDH. The concept sprang onto Victor when he noticed there was a plush toy in her crib of a butterfly and also her smile displayed a sign of strength, hope, and courage to overcome challenges that might come ahead...
